Heritage & Distillery

Boatyard Distillery occupies a position of singular charm on the shores of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland — a location that contributes not merely atmosphere but, one suspects, something of the spirit's distinctive freshness. Founded by Joe McGirr, whose dedication to perfecting his vodka recipe over the course of a full year before bringing it to market speaks to an admirable refusal to compromise on quality, Boatyard has established itself as one of Ireland's most respected craft distilleries.

The wheat used in production is harvested in Kildare, keeping the supply chain firmly within Ireland and lending the spirit a genuine claim to Irish provenance that extends beyond mere bottling location. At 41% ABV — a shade above the standard 40% — the vodka declares a quiet confidence in its own character.

Production & Tasting

The nose is delicate and inviting — floral notes emerge first, followed by fresh cut grass and a clean wheaten sweetness underpinned by mineral undertones that suggest the influence of the local water source. The palate is smooth and refined, with gentle wheat character providing the foundation for a creamy mid-palate and subtle herbal complexity. The weight on the palate is excellent — neither too heavy nor too light, but precisely calibrated to convey both smoothness and substance.

The finish is long and clean, with a gentle warmth and a faintly mineral, almost lakeside freshness that is wholly distinctive and entirely apt given the distillery's waterside location. This is a vodka that tells you where it comes from with every sip.

Verdict

Boatyard Vodka is a genuinely impressive craft spirit that rewards the care and patience invested in its development. The wheaten base is well-handled, the 41% ABV strength is well-judged, and the overall character — refined, fresh, and distinctly Irish — places it among the best artisanal vodkas currently available from the British Isles. Warmly recommended.

What a beautifully crafted spirit. The nose gives you fresh cut grass and lovely character, and on the palate it's all about Smooth and refined with gentle wheat character. The mouthfeel is particularly impressive — silky, full, and rewarding. The finish rounds everything off with lakeside freshness. Anyone who says all vodka tastes the same hasn't tried this. The review here nails it.

I was reading the tasting notes in the review and thought they sounded too good to be true for a vodka, but they're accurate. The fresh cut grass is genuinely there, the Smooth and refined with gentle wheat character delivers, and the lakeside freshness is exactly as described. Served this at a tasting with friends last weekend — everyone was surprised how much character it has. We did a blind comparison against two other brands and this won hands down.
