Heritage & Distillery

This special-edition 175cl magnum of Elit by Stoli arrives in a matte black bottle equipped with an illumination feature that, when activated, transforms the vessel into a rather striking table centrepiece. One might be forgiven for suspecting that the bottle is the primary point of the exercise — and for a certain market segment, it undoubtedly is — but the liquid within remains the same freeze-filtered Elit that has earned its place among the world's finest vodkas, and it would be a disservice to dismiss it merely on account of its theatrical packaging.

The Elit line represents the apex of Stolichnaya's considerable distillation expertise, employing a patented freeze-filtration technique that chills the spirit to minus eighteen degrees Celsius before passing it through a series of filters. This process, which Stoli claims removes impurities that conventional filtration methods cannot reach, produces a vodka of remarkable smoothness and purity.

Production & Tasting

The nose is pristine — soft vanilla, white pepper, and the faintest mineral whisper are all that announce themselves, and they do so with the quiet confidence of a spirit that has nothing to prove. On the palate, Elit is exceptionally smooth and silky, with cream, subtle citrus, and a luxurious weight that coats the palate in a manner that justifies the premium pricing. The freeze-filtration has clearly achieved its intended effect — there is not a single rough edge to be found.

The finish is long, clean, and effortlessly smooth, with a gentle peppery warmth that provides the only reminder that one is drinking a 40% spirit. In magnum format, the vodka benefits from the larger volume's stabilising effect on the liquid, and one notices a fractionally greater depth of flavour compared to the standard 70cl bottling.

Verdict

At £152.25, this is emphatically a purchase for occasions rather than everyday consumption, and the illuminated bottle is either a delightful conversation piece or an unnecessary extravagance depending on one's aesthetic sensibilities. The liquid, however, is beyond reproach — Elit remains one of the world's finest vodkas, and in magnum format it is arguably even more impressive. A luxury item that delivers genuine luxury.

A reliable pour that won't blow your mind but does the job. The nose has Pristine purity with soft vanilla — the review is accurate there. The palate gives you Exceptionally smooth and silky with cream, which is fine but a bit safe. I keep reaching for other bottles when I want to sip neat, but for cocktails it's hard to complain. The clean is clean.

Good quality spirit but slightly overpriced for what it is. The white pepper is the highlight — Pristine purity with soft vanilla and well-presented. On the palate, the Exceptionally smooth and silky with cream is fine but not exciting. At £152.25, I'd expect more character. The Long is pleasant but brief. A reliable mixer.
