Heritage & Distillery

Mikolasch traces its origins to 1842 in Lviv, one of western Ukraine's great cultural cities and a place whose Central European heritage — Austro-Hungarian, Polish, and Ukrainian by turns — has produced a distinctive spirit-making tradition. The brand's revival as a single-farm vodka is a laudable exercise in provenance, with the corn base and pure well water both sourced from the distillery's own agricultural land. In a market saturated with brands making unverifiable claims about heritage and tradition, Mikolasch's 180-year history and single-farm production model stand on solid ground.

The use of corn as a base ingredient places Mikolasch in an interesting category — corn-based vodkas tend to be sweeter and more approachable than their rye or wheat equivalents, with a velvety texture that lends itself to smooth, easy-drinking spirits. The Ukrainian tradition of corn distilling, while less celebrated internationally than Poland's rye heritage or Sweden's wheat expertise, has a long and honourable history that deserves greater recognition.

Tasting Notes

The nose presents velvety sweetcorn, gentle citrus, light floral notes, and a hint of mineral freshness that speaks to the quality of the well water. On the palate, Mikolasch is smooth and velvety — the corn base delivering the sweet, rounded character one expects from this base ingredient, with elegant citrus notes adding brightness and a creamy texture that invites comparison with spirits at twice the price. Light and refined, with a balance that flatters both simple and more elaborate cocktail applications.

The finish is medium in length, clean and smooth, with lingering citrus and sweet grain. There is nothing challenging here, but nothing deficient either — this is a well-made, characterful corn vodka that merits attention.

Verdict

Mikolasch is an attractive proposition — a corn vodka with genuine heritage, single-farm provenance, and a smooth, citrus-touched character that punches above its very accessible price point. Recommended as a cocktail base and a quiet vindication of the Ukrainian corn-vodka tradition.

One of the most well-crafted vodkas I've tasted. The gentle citrus promises quality, and the palate delivers with elegant citrus notes and a creamy texture. Nothing feels harsh or out of place. The Medium ties it all together. I tried it neat, chilled, and in a Moscow Mule — it shines in all three. The corn base gives it a distinctive character. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I was reading the tasting notes in the review and thought they sounded too good to be true for a vodka, but they're accurate. The gentle citrus is genuinely there, the Light and refined with good balance delivers, and the clean and smooth with lingering citrus and sweet grain is exactly as described. Served this at a tasting with friends last weekend — everyone was surprised how much character it has. We did a blind comparison against two other brands and this won hands down.

As someone who's been appreciating quality vodka for years, this is among the finest I've encountered at this price point. On the nose I get gentle citrus — let it warm slightly in the glass and the aromas open up. The palate is where it really shines: Light and refined with good balance with beautiful texture. Mikolasch Distillery has clearly mastered their craft.

Decent vodka for the price. The nose is clean — I got the gentle citrus that the review mentions — but the palate didn't wow me. The Light and refined with good balance is fine but nothing special, and I'd have preferred more character coming through. That said, the clean and smooth with lingering citrus and sweet grain is clean enough. Works well in cocktails where you don't need a premium bottle.
