Tasting Notes

Nose

Mellow and rounded with age, showing a gentle grain sweetness and subtle vanilla. More characterful than the modern version.

Palate

Smooth and surprisingly full-bodied, with a rounder, more grain-forward profile than today's Smirnoff. A pleasant sweetness and waxy texture from decades in the bottle.

Finish

Medium-length with a gentle, mellow warmth.

Smirnoff Red Label needs no introduction — it is the world's best-selling vodka and has been for decades. But this particular bottling hails from the 1970s, produced in England, and offers a drinking experience that is noticeably different from the modern product.

Time in the bottle has mellowed this spirit considerably. The nose shows a gentle grain sweetness and subtle vanilla that are more pronounced than in today's highly refined version. On the palate, there is a roundness and body that speaks to a less aggressive filtration regime and perhaps different production standards of the era.

The texture is slightly waxy, which adds a pleasant richness, and the grain character is more evident than in any recent Smirnoff bottling. It is not a revelation, but it is a genuinely interesting drinking experience — particularly for anyone curious about how mass-market vodka tasted half a century ago.

At £49.95, this is priced as a collector's item rather than a daily drinker, and that seems fair. It is a piece of spirits history in a bottle, and it holds up surprisingly well.

Good quality spirit but slightly overpriced for what it is. The showing a gentle grain sweetness and subtle vanilla is the highlight — More characterful than the modern version and well-presented. On the palate, the more grain-forward profile than today's Smirnoff is fine but not exciting. At £49.95, I'd expect more character. The Medium-length with a gentle is pleasant but brief. A reliable mixer.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The nose has Mellow and rounded with age but on the palate there's a harshness that I wasn't expecting from the review. The more grain-forward profile than today's Smirnoff described didn't come through for me. The Medium-length with a gentle has a burn where I wanted clean warmth. Others clearly rate it highly so it may be personal preference. Won't be buying another bottle though.
