Heritage & Distillery

Stoli Vanilla represents the flavoured arm of the Stolichnaya portfolio, and it is a credit to the brand that this expression manages to deliver genuine vanilla character without descending into the saccharine artificiality that plagues so many flavoured vodkas. The base spirit is the same quadruple-distilled wheat and rye blend that underpins the entire Stoli range, produced at Latvijas Balzams in Riga with the same attention to raw material quality and distillation precision that characterises the Premium expression.

The use of Madagascan vanilla — rather than the cheaper Tahitian or synthetic alternatives available to less scrupulous producers — signals a commitment to ingredient quality that is by no means universal in the flavoured vodka category. Madagascar produces the world's finest vanilla, its beans prized for their rich, complex flavour profile and their characteristic creamy sweetness, and this quality is manifestly apparent in the finished spirit.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with rich, authentic Madagascan vanilla — warm, custard-like, and underpinned by a gentle caramel note and the soft grain sweetness of the base spirit. On the palate, the vanilla is creamy and fresh, balanced by a subtle peppery spice that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. The integration of flavouring and base spirit is accomplished with commendable skill — one tastes a vanilla-infused vodka rather than vanilla syrup with vodka, a distinction that separates the competent from the mediocre in this category.

The finish is medium in length, smooth, with lingering vanilla cream that closes on a clean, dry note — a welcome departure from the sticky, persistent sweetness that characterises lesser flavoured vodkas.

The Serve

Stoli Vanilla is remarkably versatile. It makes an excellent Vanilla Espresso Martini, where the natural vanilla character harmonises with the coffee's bitterness to produce something greater than either component alone. A simple serve over ice with a splash of ginger ale is also highly effective, and the brand's suggestion of drizzling it over ice cream is, if unconventional, genuinely inspired.

Verdict

At seven out of ten, Stoli Vanilla achieves what many flavoured vodkas attempt and few accomplish — a spirit that tastes of its declared flavouring in a natural, integrated fashion while retaining the character and structure of a properly made vodka. A reliable and genuinely enjoyable expression that justifies its modest premium over the base spirit.

Not terrible but not worth the premium. The nose promised Rich Madagascan vanilla and caramel and soft grain sweetness, but the palate is flat and the dry close disappears too quickly. I've had better vodkas at half the price. The gentle sweetness balanced by a subtle peppery spice the review describes wasn't apparent to me. Perhaps I got a bad bottle.

Third bottle in and it just gets better. The nose opens with caramel and soft grain sweetness — I also picked up warm custard that the review mentions. On the palate, Not cloying or artificial is spot on, and there's a Creamy and fresh with genuine vanilla character that makes this incredibly smooth. The finish closes with smooth with lingering vanilla cream and a clean. This has become my go-to. Makes an incredible Martini too.
